The Sacred Forest of Mawphlang is located in the East Khasi Hills of Shillong Meghalaya and is also called as Law Lyngdoh. The sacred forest is preserved by the Khasi locals and is believed by them to be sacred.


The Sacred Forest is known for its diversified flora consisting of several plants, trees and rare flower species, including orchids.  The groves present in the forest are generally rimmed by a dense growth of Castanopsis kurzii trees, forming a protective hedge which halts intrusion of Pinus kasia (Khasi pine) which dominates all areas outside the sacred groves. Inside the outer rim, the sacred groves are virtually Nature’s Own Museum. The heavily covered grounds have a thick cushion of humus accumulated over the centuries. The trees in every sacred groveare heavily loaded with epiphytic growth of aroids, pipers, ferns, fern-allies and orchids. The humus-covered grounds likewise harbour myriad varieties of plant life, many of which are found nowhere else.

A Khasi Heritage Village has been created here by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council opposite the Mawphlang Sacred Forest. It consists of various types of authentic, traditionally constructed mock tribal huts. Local food and toilets are available.  Tourists can enter the sacred forest from 9 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. daily.

There is a small entrance fee to the sacred forest and Khasi Heritage Village is 10 rupees per person, plus 10 rupees for a camera and 50 rupees for a vehicle. This fee enables local youths to be employed as caretakers. An English-speaking Khasi guide can charge anywhere from 300 rupees onward for a half hour walk, and about rupees 500 rupees for an hour.
